WINFIELD, W.Va. — West Virginia’s newest judge is a familiar figure around the Putnam County courthouse. Mark Sorsaia last week was sworn in after his appointment to the 29th Judicial Circuit Judge seat. He replaced Joseph Reeder who resigned to take an appointment as a federal magistrate. “It’s good for me and I’m just really happy I have this opportunity to do this job now,” said Sorsaia.

Sorsaia spent 28 years as the Putnam County Prosecutor and three and a half years as an assistant under former Judge Hobby Spaulding when he was prosecutor.

“Judge Spaulding used to tell me trying cases is a young man’s game. Being prosecutor was a lot of stress, anxiety, and a lot of work and trial prep. You’re working seven days a week if you do it right to get ready for a trial. Now than I’m 67 and have grey hair, I’m ready for the judgeship,” he said.

Sorsaia said although he had opportunities through the years to run for a position on the bench, he never really considered it because he enjoyed being the prosecutor. More recently he served in the Justice Administration as Secretary of Homeland Security, a position he described as “24/7”

As the Governor’s tenure neared an end, the judicial vacancy presented what Sorsaia considered a perfect opportunity with perfect timing for him to continue is work in the legal realm.

“I couldn’t ask for a more fulfilling legal career as a lawyer,” he said.

Sorsaia looked forward to engaging in some programs as a Judge which could make a difference and have a positive impact, including adult drug court.

He’ll serve until the next primary election in two years and would have to run for the full term. Sorsaia said for now, his plan is to seek the full term in the next election.
