A Message to Putnam County Republicans

Tony Hodge • Chairman

Welcome, and thank you for stopping by the official home of the Putnam County Republican Executive Committee.

Putnam County is one of the strongest Republican counties in West Virginia, and that strength did not happen by accident. It was built by neighbors who talked to friends, showed up to meetings, and voted their values year after year. Our job on this committee is to keep that foundation strong and hand it to the next generation even stronger.

We stay focused on the fundamentals: recruiting good candidates, organizing every precinct, communicating our conservative message, and turning out the vote. If you share our belief in limited government, the sanctity of life, the Second Amendment, and the freedoms our founders secured, there is a seat at this table for you.

Come to a meeting. Volunteer for a campaign. Bring a friend. We would be honored to have you in this fight with us.

The Executive Committee

Each member of the committee is elected on the public ballot in each non-presidential election year. Once elected, the committee elects its own officers. Each magisterial district in the county is represented by two men and two women.

New Program

Become a Precinct Captain

Putnam County is organized into roughly forty individual voting precincts, the most basic building block of grassroots politics. A Precinct Captain is a volunteer who serves as the committee's get-out-the-vote leader and trusted point of contact for Republican voters in their own precinct.

This is a brand new program for our committee, and every precinct in the county needs a captain. No experience is necessary, and training is provided.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I'm registered as a Republican?

Use the Secretary of State's registration lookup tool. Enter your name and date of birth and it will show your current party registration and polling place.

How do I become a member of the Executive Committee?

Committee members are elected directly by Republican voters at the primary election every four years, one man and one woman from each magisterial district. If a seat opens up between elections, any current Committee member can nominate someone from that same district (of the same gender as the person who vacated the seat), and the full Committee votes on it at the next regular meeting.

What does the Executive Committee actually do?

The Committee manages the local party's affairs within West Virginia GOP guidelines: organizing precincts, supporting the Republican ticket in the general election, and electing a Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer to run day-to-day operations. By its own bylaws, the Committee does not use its funds to support one candidate over another in a primary race.

How often does the committee meet, and can anyone attend?

The Committee meets monthly. Our bylaws set quarterly as the minimum required frequency, but we hold meetings more often than that. Only elected Committee members vote on Committee business, but Republican voters in Putnam County are welcome to attend and hear what's happening.

How do I get involved if I don't have much free time?

Signing up for our email updates takes thirty seconds and keeps you informed without any commitment. From there, things like sharing a social media post, showing up to one event, or becoming a Precinct Captain in your own neighborhood are all valuable, and you can do as much or as little as your schedule allows.

What's the difference between the county committee and the state party?

The Putnam County Republican Executive Committee handles party organizing here at home: recruiting local candidates, running precincts, and hosting county events. The West Virginia Republican Party (WVGOP) sets statewide guidelines and rules that county committees like ours operate within.

How do I run for local or county office as a Republican?

Candidates file directly with the County Clerk or Secretary of State during the candidate filing period (typically mid-January). Reach out to us early, we're happy to talk through the process and connect you with resources.

Where can I find who's on my ballot?

Use the GoVoteWV Sample Ballot Lookup. Enter your name, date of birth, and county to see exactly what will be on your ballot.
